International Security and NATO II.

Study programme for Serbian and Montenegrian university students

One of the main priorities of the Jagello 2000 association is its educational programmes. That is why we have prepared a special programme for university students from Serbia and Montenegro entitled "International security and NATO". The aim of this project is to provide orientation into recent developments in NATO concerning the relationship between NATO and the EU, and an insight into Czech experiences of NATO membership.

The programme is conceived as two week-long workshops a year in a three-year period. Each programme is designed for a group of twenty students.

Each participant of the programme will obtain a reader. The programme is supervised by the Institute of International Relations (www.iir.cz) and the Prague Security Studies Institute (www.pssi.cz). The Institute of Comparative Law (www.icl.org.yu) in Belgrade serves as our partner in Serbia and Montenegro and is responsible for the promotion of this programme and for the selection of students.

The workshop lasts for five days and is in the form of two parts. Each morning academic lectures take place at the Institute of International Relations. After lunch a practical element is introduced consisting of lectures and meetings with top Czech and foreign diplomats, representatives of the army, security bodies and NGOs. For further details concerning the programme please click here: international_security_and_nato.pdf (166 kB).

The programme is in no way restricted to students of politics or history. Those studying physics, geography, law or journalism, indeed any of the subjects connected with security issues are encouraged to attend. We also welcome students from military academies. The first study programme was held from 7th to 14th May 2005 and it proved to be a great success. We intend to continue in the same vein.

The only conditions for participation in this programme are an active knowledge of English and a deep interest in this field. Participation is free as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic covers all costs. These include:

  • return plane ticket from Belgrade to Prague
  • visa
  • accommodation and full board
  • local transport in Prague

The second study programme takes place from 19th to 26th November 2005. Students wishing to take part in this programme have until the 4th of November 2005 to complete the compulsory online registration form on this website; along with sending a copy of their CV with a one page motivation letter supporting their inclusion in the programme - both in English.

All applicant data will be evaluated by all our partners and the results will be shown on this website on Friday 11th November 2005. Those chosen will immediately be contacted by the Institute of Comparative Law to arrange all details.

Due to the expense involved in this programme all selected students will be required to enter into a contract of attendance with the Institute of Comparative Law.

If you have any further questions regarding this programme, don't hesitate to contact us via this e-mail address: eaf@jagello.org.
